A well-designed landscape doesn’t have to be complex to be beautiful and functional. We recently completed a landscape design project in Troy, MI, where we created a simple yet elegant front garden that will mature into a stunning space without becoming overcrowded.
Our design focused on balanced plantings that offer year-round appeal with minimal maintenance. At the back of the bed, we planted Dwarf Viburnum for structure and privacy, while a line of perennials in the middle added color and seasonal interest. In the front, we installed boxwoods for a neat, evergreen border, and to bring immediate vibrancy, we planted annuals in front of the boxwoods. These annuals provided instant color, creating a welcoming appearance while the perennials and shrubs matured.
Additionally, we transplanted hostas from other areas of the yard to the bed’s edge, enhancing the overall look with lush, shade-tolerant greenery. A fresh layer of mulch was applied to tie everything together and keep the bed clean and weed-free. Months later, we followed up with the client and found that they had very few weeds, a testament to the thoughtful design and proper maintenance.

The Benefits of a Simple, Low-Maintenance Landscape Design
A simple, well-planned landscape can be just as stunning as a complex design—without the hassle of constant upkeep. Here are the key benefits of choosing a straightforward yet effective landscape design:
- Less Overcrowding: A design with carefully selected plants spaced appropriately ensures that the landscape won’t become too crowded as plants mature. This allows each plant to thrive and fill its space without overwhelming the garden.
- Year-Round Appeal: Combining evergreen shrubs, seasonal perennials, and annuals creates a landscape that has something to offer every season. The Dwarf Viburnum and boxwoods offer structure and color year-round, while the perennials and annuals bring seasonal changes.
- Low Maintenance: This design is easy to care for, with minimal pruning and upkeep required. The use of hostas and boxwoods reduces the need for constant attention, and the application of mulch helps control weeds and retain moisture.
- Enhanced Curb Appeal: A clean, balanced landscape enhances the exterior of your home, making it more inviting to guests and boosting your home’s overall curb appeal.
Effective Weed Control with Mulching
Mulching is a crucial component of sustainable landscape maintenance, offering both aesthetic and practical benefits. In this project, we applied a generous layer of mulch to suppress weed growth and retain soil moisture. Mulch acts as a natural barrier against weeds by blocking sunlight and preventing their seeds from germinating. It also helps regulate soil temperature and reduces evaporation, ensuring that plants receive consistent moisture levels. Our follow-up with the customer months later confirmed that this approach significantly minimized weed presence, making maintenance easier and more efficient.
